Abstract
An experimental investigation of the tangentiaì drag of an axially oscillating cylinder is presented. Deep-sea mooring cables are oscillated sinusoidally at ocean wave amplitudes and frequencies, and experimenta1 values of the tangential (friction) drag coefficient are obtained. The experimental values of the drag coefficient are compared with values predicted by the exact solution to the Navier-Stokes equations for a smooth cylinder in laminar flow. The experimental data reports drag coefficient values that are consistently higher than those predicted by the laminar theory. An attempt is made to interpret the discrepancies in terms of the effects of roughness and/or turbulence.
