Description of W.H.O.I. rock dredge samples : volume 3
(Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, 1981-05) Farmer, Harlow G. ; Dick, Henry J. B.
This report is Volume III of DESCRIPTIONS OF WHOI ROCK DREDGE SAMPLES. This series represents a major effort to catalog the rock dredge samples in the WHOI Sea Floor Samples collection, and to disseminate this information throughout the scientific community. Volume III contains sample descriptions and station data for the dredge stations from five cruises during the period September 1978 through December 1980. The material in this and subsequent volumes of rock descriptions was largely prepared onboard ship by the participating scientists. Volumes I and II are now being prepared by the WHOI Curatorial staff, and describe material in the rock collection obtained prior to 1978. Volume III is being printed prior to volumes I and II because of the excellent documentation of the samples represented in this volume, and because more effort remains in documenting the samples obtained on some of the older cruises. We expect that volumes I and II will be printed and distributed with in the next year.

Description of W.H.O.I. rock dredge samples : volume 1
(Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, 1981-10) Farmer, Harlow G. ; Broda, James E.
This report is Volume I in the series of reports entitled, "DESCRIPTIONS OF W.H.O.I. ROCK DREDGE SAMPLES". This series represents a major effort to catalog and prepare initial descriptions for all rock dredge samples in the W.H.O.I. Sea Floor Samples Collection, and to distribute this information throughout the scientific community. Volume I contains sample descriptions from approximately 382 dredging stations executed during the period 1960 through 1977. It also presents a digitized listing of all dredge station data for the entire W.H.O.I. Dredge Collection through 1980. The data are sorted by Marsden Square and can serve as a regional index for all rock descriptions included in Volumes I-III.

An experimental study of salt wedges
(Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, 1951-12) Farmer, Harlow G.
The objective of the estuary studies being conducted at this Institution is to attempt an understanding of tidal flushing. Two theories have been developed, that of Ketchum employing an extension of the tidal prism technique, and that of Arons and Stommel who treat the flushing problem through the diffusion theory. An experimental program has been established to determine the validity of these theories so that model laws may be established for tidal flushing. At the beginning of this program, the phenomenon of the salt water wedge was observed in the experimental apparatus over a wide range of flow conditions. To produce salinity distributions other than this, it was necessary to stimulate diffusion of the salt water with turbulence created by added roughness. In view of the apparent importance of the salt wedge, it was decided that an investigation of the factors that influence its shape and length would be of particular value to the future work. An empirical equation has been developed which describes the salt water wedges formed in the laboratory. This equation, how ever, does not describe well the salt wedge as found in the Mississippi River. It is of particular interest that the equation appears to describe the mean horizontal distribution of salinity in estuaries where the fresh and salt water are well mixed and not stratified as in the wedge.
