On the dynamics of the Zanzibar Channel
    (John Wiley & Sons, 2015-09-12) Zavala-Garay, Javier ; Theiss, Jurgen ; Moulton, Melissa ; Walsh, Connor ; van Woesik, Robert ; Mayorga-Adame, Claudia G. ; García-Reyes, Marisol ; Mukaka, D. S. ; Whilden, Kerri ; Shaghude, Y. W.
The Zanzibar Channel lies between the mainland of Tanzania and Zanzibar Island in the tropical western Indian Ocean, is about 100 km long, 40 km wide, and 40 m deep, and is essential to local socioeconomic activities. This paper presents a model of the seasonal and tidal dynamics of the Zanzibar Channel based on the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) and a comparison of the model and observations. The seasonal dynamics of the channel is forced by remote processes and the local wind. Remote forcing creates the East African Coastal Current, a portion of which flows through the channel northward with a seasonally varying magnitude. The local wind enhances this seasonality in the surface Ekman layer, resulting in a stronger northward flow during the southwest monsoon season and a weak northward or occasionally southward flow during the northeast monsoon season. The tidal flows converge and diverge in the center of the channel and reduce the transport in the channel. The remotely forced, wind-forced, and tidal dynamics contain 5%, 3%, and 92% of the total kinetic energy, respectively. Despite their low kinetic energy, the remotely forced and wind-forced flows are most relevant in advecting channel water to the open ocean, which occurs in 19 days at the peak of the southwest monsoon season. The channel is well mixed, except during brief periods in the two rainy seasons, and temporarily cools between December and February. The dispersion of passive tracers is presented as an example of potential model applications.

Parrotfish bite rates, volume of substrate removed, and estimates of erosional scars for each species observed in surveys at Palau, Yap, and the Federated States of Micronesia in 2017 and 2018
(Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO). Contact: bco-dmo-data@whoi.edu, 2020-09-29) van Woesik, Robert
As part of the reef-composition survey of Palau, Yap, and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the erosion caused by parrotfish grazing at each site was estimated with in-situ data of size and density of parrotfish species. Data were also derived from the scientific literature on the species-specific bite rates and other processes that influence fish bioerosion rates. Field data were collected in Palau from June 2nd to 24th, 2017, in Yap from June 25th to July 6th, 2017, and in FSM in 2018. Transect data of coral species and other substrate types collected in the field using line transects in Palau, Yap, the Federated States of Micronesia, Majuro, and Kiritimati from 2017 to 2019

As part of the reef-composition survey of Palau (7°30' N, 134°30' E) and Yap (9°32' N, 138°7' E), 10-meter long, 2 to 5-meter depth transects were conducted. Coral species along the transect were recorded along with substrate types and other organisms present. Surveys in Palau were conducted from June 2nd to June 24th, 2017, and from June 25th to July 6th, 2017 in Yap. In Pohnpei (6.2°N, 158.2°E) and Kosrae (5.3°N, 162.9°E) FSM, six 10-meter transects were used to measure the benthic composition for every centimeter, at each site of 48 sites in 2018. Corals were recorded to species level, except massive Porites and encrusting Montipora, which were recorded in the field as growth forms. All other organisms along each transect were identified to the highest possible taxonomic resolution. In Majuro (7.0667° N, 171.2667° E) and Kiritimati (1.8721° N, 157.4278° W), a stratified random sampling approach was used to survey the reefs in2019. At both locations, the sites were stratified as either (i) outer reefs, or (ii) patch reefs in lagoons. The number of sites sampled per habitat varied according to the area of available habitat at each location. Surveys were focused between 2–5 m. Bleaching and environmental data for global coral reef sites from 1998-2017
(Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO). Contact: bco-dmo-data@whoi.edu, 2019-12-09) van Woesik, Robert ; Burkepile, Deron
The coral bleaching data were composed of the Reef Check dataset (reefcheck.org), collected by a mixture of professional scientists (56%) and trained and certified citizen-scientists (44%) using a standardized transect protocol. The dataset includes counts of the number of coral colonies showing bleaching (i.e., the percent of reef corals that were recorded as bleached), which was classified as site-wide bleaching. We also examined the prevalence of coral bleaching per coral ecoregion (as defined by Veron et al. 2015). We used the global Coral Reef Temperature Anomaly Database (CoRTAD Version 6) from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (www.nodc.noaa.gov/sog/cortad/) to predict coral bleaching prevalence and intensity across reefs worldwide. All CoRTAD variables were weekly data provided on a grid cell basis, of ~4km resolution, from 1982 to 2017(Sully 2019). As part of reef composition survey in Palau (7°30' N, 134°30' E) and Yap (9°32' N, 138°7' E), herbivorous parrotfish were identified to species and analyzed for size from video transects. Survey depth was between 2 to 5 meters due to an interest in determining the potential of shallow-water reef carbonate production. Fishes were videoed along six, 30 m long by 4 m wide transects. The herbivorous parrotfishes in the videos were subsequently analyzed for size (cm) and identity. Surveys in Palau were conducted in June 2 to June 24, 2017, and from June 25 to July 6, 2017 in Yap.
