Technical ReportCruise Report W-36 : scientific activities undertaken aboard R/V Westward, Woods Hole - San Juan, October 12 - November 23, 1977(SEA Education Association, 1977-11) Gaines, Arthur G.This report is the outcome of a six-week cruise aboard the Research Vessel Westward that took twenty-three students across the western North Atlantic Ocean and the eastern Caribbean Sea. The pages that follow outline the structure of Introduction to Marine Science (NS 225 at Boston University) and abstract the research and project work which constitutes its framework. Our objective, in addition, is to provide the students with an overview of what has been accomplished and the staff with a last opportunity to summarize observations or measurements whose significance requires reemphasis. The scientific merit and sophistication of the student reports varies appreciably; in part this reflects the variable scientific content of their academic backgrounds. I find it interesting, however, that there are striking exceptions to this correlation. In preparing this report at sea we are imparting to it limitations that time, library facilities and reflection could mitigate. On the other hand the students will soon disseminate across the Western Hemisphere and there will be no other opportunity.

Technical ReportCruise Report W-37 : scientific activities undertaken aboard R/V Westward, San Juan - Miami, November 30, 1977- January 11, 1978(SEA Education Association, 1978-01) Allison, Molly D.The educational program offered as the W-37 component of Introduction to Marine Science (NS 225 at Boston University) consisted of a formal classroom learning experience (31 lectures or seminars were presented), structured laboratory study, and participation in individual research projects. Viewed as an integrated whole, W-37 was divided into several different areas of concentration: there were short-term projects occupying the ship's company to the exclusion of most other concerns for up to a few days and longer ones involving continuous data collection and analysis for the entire 6 weeks of the voyage or major portions thereof.

These projects are outlined below, and preliminary results are given. Following the narrative section of this report are summaries of the scientific logs, station lists and positions, trackline plots and sighting estimates for the humpback whale census work, and the completed Gulf Stream profile.

Technical ReportCruise Report W-39 : scientific activities undertaken aboard R/V Westward, Key West - Woods Hole, April 12 - May 24, 1978(SEA Education Association, 1978-05) Gaines, Arthur G.Our objective in this report is to present a record and an overview of the scientific program conducted during W-39. The annotations which accompany these abstracted results are intended to make this more than a standard oceanographic cruise report. We regard this report as an opportunity to clarify, to define and to summarize some of the research-related multidisciplinary subject matter treated in Introduction to Marine Science Laboratory, a course which inevitably draws students of diverse backgrounds.

Technical ReportCruise Report W-40 : scientific activities undertaken aboard the R/V Westward, Woods Hole - Bermuda -Ile Saint-Pierre - Woods Hole, 7 June 1978 - 19 July 1978(SEA Education Association, 1978-07) Farmer, Mary W.The main objective of this cruise report is to compile the data collected by 24 undergraduate students, 3 staff scientists and 2 visiting scholars on W-40 as part of the Introduction to Marine Science (NS 225 at Boston University). This compilation in one place can serve as a guide for future Westward cruises, as a data base for interpretation of results by scientists ashore, and as a teaching reference in the shore component of the course. The cruise report between these covers presents an overview of the cruise W-40 with some preliminary interpretations of results. We conducted an array of individual projects, many of them focused on the theme of diurnal rhythms, and this report provides space to see how our diverse interests meshed.

Technical ReportCruise Report W-41 : scientific activities undertaken aboard R/V Westward, Woods Hole - Bermuda - Lunenberg - Boston, July 26 - September 6, 1978(SEA Education Association, 1978-09) Baum, Carl M.This report documents the scientific education and research programs undertaken on the 41st cruise of the R/V Westward under direction of Sea Education Association, Woods Hole, Mass. Primary among our purposes on this six week cruise was to give its twenty-three students a multidisciplinary exposure to oceanographic concepts and research techniques, drawing on the various backgrounds of the staff and the sampling equipment on board. To this end, students were offered a wide range of relevant lecture material and on watch instruction; they were required to participate as assistants in staff directed research, as well as accomplish a personal research project of their own design. This program thus comprises Boston University Course NS CLX 225, Introduction to Marine Science Laboratory.

Technical ReportCruise Report W-42 : scientific activities undertaken aboard R/V Westward, Woods Hole - St. Thomas, October 11 - November 22, 1978(SEA Education Association, 1978-11) Gaines, Arthur G.This report presents an outline of the scientific activities and observations conducted aboard the R/V Westward during W-42. These activities fall into two categories: an academic program offered in more or less traditional format, but on board ship; and research and project work conducted on a more individual basis. Most of this report consists of abstracts from the students' Shipboard Reports which outline individual projects and give a first assessment of the results. The staff has also taken this opportunity to enlarge upon or interrelate aspects of our activities which may have seemed unclear during the cruise.

The report presents an overview of cruise W-43 with some preliminary interpretation of results. We conducted an array of individual projects, many of them focused on the study of island mass effects, and this report provides space to see how our diverse interests meshed.

This is accomplished by the presentation of abstracts from the research projects of each student, together with a preliminary integration of their results by members of the staff. In addition, reports of the status of on-going projects and of the traditional academic program are included.

Technical ReportCruise Report W-48 : scientific activities undertaken aboard R/V Westward, Woods Hole - St. Thomas, 10 October - 21 November 1979(SEA Education Association, 1979-11) Humphris, Susan E.This Cruise Report is written in an attempt to accomplish two objectives. Firstly, and more importantly, it presents a brief outline of the scientific research completed aboard R/V Westward during W-48. Reports of the status of on-going projects and of the traditional academic program are presented. In addition, abstracts from the research projects of each student are included. Secondly, for those of us that participated, it represents the product of our efforts and contains a record of other events that were an important part of the trip, in particular the activities during port stops.

Technical ReportCruise Report W-49 : scientific activities undertaken aboard R/V Westward, St. Thomas - Key West, November 28, 1979 - January 9, 1980(SEA Education Association, 1980-01) Drost, Donald M.This cruise report outlines the scientific activities for the forty-ninth cruise of the R/V Westward. These activities fall into two categories: a traditional academic program offered purely and directly for the students' scholastic benefit; and, a program of research and student projects in which the students' skill and drive and curiosity determined the scope and benefit of their participation. Emphasis was on study and investigation uniquely available aboard a sailing oceanographic research vessel. The scientific method was emphasized.

Technical ReportCruise Report W-50 : scientific activities undertaken aboard the R/V Westward, Miami - Miami, 6 February 1980 - 19 March 1980(SEA Education Association, 1980-03) Humphris, Susan E.The purpose of this Cruise Report is to present a brief outline of the scientific activities completed aboard R/V Westward during W-50. Reports of the status of ongoing projects and of the traditional academic program are included, as well as abstracts from the research projects of the students. The report was composed at sea, and does not represent a detailed interpretation of the data. The limitations of the lack of library facilities and restricted time are clearly reflected in the contents. However, I feel that it is important for the students to be responsible for the completion of their projects while at sea, including writing up a report. The abstracts of these constitute the bulk of this report.
