The goal of this project was to directly measure the dense water pathways upstream of the Denmark Strait in the Iceland Sea and compare the results to existing ideas about the dynamics of the circulation by deploying 45 acoustically tracked RAFOS floats over a two year time period (24-Jul-2013 to 29-May-2015). The floats were ballasted to drift at a target depth of 500m, recording pressure, temperature, and Times Of Arrivals (TOAs) every six hours or every 12 hours.

The emergence of the North Icelandic Jet and its evolution from northeast Iceland to Denmark Strait
Semper, Stefanie; Våge, Kjetil; Pickart, Robert S.; Valdimarsson, Héðinn; Torres, Daniel J.; Jónsson, Steingrímur (American Meteorological Society, 2019-09-19)The North Icelandic Jet (NIJ) is an important source of dense water to the overflow plume passing through Denmark Strait. The properties, structure, and transport of the NIJ are investigated for the first time along its ... -
Evolution of the East Greenland Current from Fram Strait to Denmark Strait : synoptic measurements from summer 2012

The data reveal that, along a portion of the ... -
Water column structure and statistics of denmark strait overflow water cyclones
von Appen, Wilken-Jon; Pickart, Robert S.; Brink, Kenneth H.; Haine, Thomas W. N. (2013-10-30)Data from seven moorings deployed across the East Greenland shelfbreak and slope 280 km downstream of Denmark Strait are used to investigate the characteristics and dynamics of Denmark Strait Overflow Water (DSOW) cyclones. ...
