DatasetMassachusetts Clean Energy Center MetOcean Data Initiative( 2019-04-04) Kirincich, Anthony R. ; Faluotico, Stephen M.This data was collected by Kirincich as part of a metocean monitoring campaign designed around the observation of key atmospheric and ocean parameters at an existing offshore platform in the proximity of the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Wind Energy Areas. The campaign supported the purchase and installation of a LIDAR wind profiler, two cup anemometers and a wind direction vane at the MVCO Air-Sea Interaction Tower (ASIT). These instruments, chosen in consultation with AWS Truepower to adhere to Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC)’s MetOcean Measurement Plan, were installed over the course of four day cruises to the MVCO tower between October and December 2016 and maintained to present.

Technical ReportExtracting wind sea and swell from directional wave spectra derived from a bottom-mounted ADCP(Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, 2006-07) Churchill, James H. ; Plueddemann, Albert J. ; Faluotico, Stephen M.Recent advances in processing velocity data from bottom-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) offer the capability of partitioning directional wave specctra of surface wave height in order to separate locally generated wind waves from swell. In the study described here, we have partitioned directional wavee spectra, derived from bottom-mounted ADCP measurements at the Martha’s Vineyard Coastal Observatory (MVCO) south of Martha’s Vineyard, MA, into dominant swell and locally generated wind-wave components. The partitioning was carried out following the method of Hanson and Phillips (2001) using an exploratory approach. As part of tthis approach, we assessed the validity of the ADCP-derived wave spectra by comparing them with one-dimensional wavee spectra derived from laser altimeter measurements. This comparison identified a frequency range over which the ADCP-derived wave field may be suspeect. We also carried out a series of sensitivity tests in which we evaluated how the results of wave partitioning according to the Hanson and Phillips (2001) method is influenced by varying the parameters required to implement the method. In this report, we describe and assess the data sources used in our study, outline the methods employed for wave spectra partitioning and describe partitioning results.

Working PaperMassachusetts Offshore Wind Metocean Initiative: Reducing risks and accelerating deployment timeframes via a coordinated regional observing system( 2016-12-23) Kirincich, Anthony R. ; Faluotico, Stephen M.AWS Truepower (AWST) has been engaged by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) to provide monthly observed data summary reports for the wind resource monitoring equipment deployed on the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institutions Air-Sea Interaction Tower (ASIT) in support of MassCEC’s “Metocean Initiative” (the “Initiative”). The goal of the Initiative is to “advance planning and permitting and reduce the costs of offshore wind energy in the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s (BOEM) designated Massachusetts Wind Energy Area (MAWEA) and the Rhode Island/Massachusetts (RI/MA) Wind Energy Area (together, the ‘WEAs’).” The data collected and developed during this campaign are planned to support characterization of the WEAs’ long-term wind resource and metocean design conditions.

A seafloor node (12m node) collected oceanic data from the seafloor from June 14, 2001 to September 5, 2018. This dataset encompasses the core data (wind speed and direction, air pressure, temperature and relative humidity, water temperature and salinity, and wave data) that has been collected during this period.
