Introduction:

The auxiliary materials consist of four figures and one table. Table S1 summarizes locations of the stations, basic hydrographic data, nutrient uptake data, NCP, GPP and the NCP/GPP ratios at each the station during the cruise Lawrence M. Gould in Jan., 2008. Figure S1 shows the relationship of the wind speed derived from the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis and the winds speed measured on the cruise (Jan. 2008) and at the Palmer Station (2000-2010). Figure S2 shows the Fv/Fm ratios measured during the cruise in Jan. 2008. Figure S3 presents the distribution of surface phosphate and silicate concentration, and the integrated phosphate and silicate uptake for Jan. 2008. Figure S4 includes the plot of 17\Delta vs. the biological saturation of O2, and the plot of NCP vs. SST for Jan. 2008.
