Introduction This auxiliary material contains a text file, two tables and a figure. The text file details the method for cleaning opal samples after heavy liquid separation. The opal samples were cleaned using a stepwise series of reductive and oxidative reagents. These steps were carried out before dissolution and analysis. Table S1 displays the (Zn/Si)opal results for cores KC081 and PC034 (ug/g and umol/mol respectively). Numbers in parentheses are 1sd. Data labeled “a” are from Ellwood & Hunter (2000b).Table S2 displays the age models for the cores in the manuscript. Details are given for A) Radiocarbon (Antarctic marine reservoir after Berkman & Forman (1996); reservoir age = 1300 years) and B) magnetic and biostratigraphic constraints on age models of cores KC081 and PC034 (Allen et al., 2011). Figure S1 shows a comparison between the (Zn/Si)opal results of this study and Ellwood and Hunter (2000b). For location of cores see Figure 1, main text. The crosses show the radiocarbon tie points for KC081 (Allen et al., 2011). See main text for references. References: Allen, C. S., Pike, J., Pudsey, C. J., and Leventer, A., 2005.
